    • Synopsis
    • In the long hot summer of 1989, Sunshine Hills on the surface appears to be much the same as any other Australian suburb, but within its living rooms and bedrooms many secrets, mysteries and myths are whispered about…
The most whispered of all is the recent disappearance of Amanda Howatt, a sixteen year old high school student, the sixth girl to disappear from Sunshine Hills in as many years. Like the other girls her disappearance has no reason or trace – all that remains is suspicion and gossip...
All fingers point to number forty six, a derelict house with a ‘bad’ history that has only recently become occupied. - The only indication of their existence is the eerie presence of a woman who stands at the front window all day long – hidden by a flimsy curtain – she stands vigil from morning until night. The other culprit is the white van, seen combing the neighborhood in pursuit of their young children – with its black, tinted windows the driver remains anonymous.
Like his neighbors twelve year old Daniel Hobbs is entranced by these rumors – a fragile outcast that is oblivious to the turmoil’s of his own life, Daniel’s two obsessions are his camera and Suzy Thomson, a fifteen year old neighbor from across the street, his first ever crush, a Lolita who embodies the dangerous combination of innocence and blazing sexuality.
On the ever of his summer holidays, a week before his thirteenth birthday Suzy entices Daniel with a mission. In return for her friendship he must help her uncover the truth behind the disappearance of the missing girl and the identity of the occupants in number Forty Six. To do this he must use his camera to record everything – sneaking into houses at any cost to record the truth.
Thus begins a journey in which secrets become truth, innocence is lost, and the real world is a far more beautiful and terrifying place then either of the could ever have imagined…
This is Australian suburbia as never seen before – sexual, funny, sensuous and horrific Beautiful is an ode to the end of innocence and the power of a child’s imagination.
