    • Synopsis
    • Backbone is a scripted drama series set in Southern France during the 1940s and based on a true story.

The eccentric Charles Bedos is a brilliant ‘Resistance Lawyer’, who fiercely fights in court against the collaboration of the French with the Nazis. His unlikely new wife Alix, a young Catholic and conventional woman becomes a focal point as she enters a battle of her own to protect her family.

Charles’ passion for justice leads him to defend both victims and opponents of the German Occupation. He soon becomes a target for the ruthless French and Nazi authorities.

Despite the protection of a tight network of lawyers and friends, some even high-level collaborators, he is arrested after an acquaintance betrays him and is sent to die in the Nazi extermination camps.

After his arrest, Alix continues his fight by other means. Unknowingly, she has become part of an intricate web of Resistance between the Catholic Church, the local mafia, the railway, and the French administration. In her determination to find Charles’ betrayer, she is forced to accept the help of a German officer who puts her in his debt.

When Charles returns at the end of the war, Alix has proof of his traitor’s identity. Charles is torn between hunger for revenge and the need to move forward positively. While he decides to forgive his betrayer to protect his own sanity, Alix secretly enacts her own revenge in his name. The historical events and their separation changed them, and now they must adapt their love and life together.

No one is entirely innocent. Integrity is challenged. Fortitude is essential. Backbone plays on the complexity of allegiances, friendships, and love in times of war and its aftermath.
