    • Synopsis
    • ‘ASCEND’ (2024) tells the story of two outsiders who desperately want to hold their own in a world that has no place for them. Konnie, once a respected figure in Berlin's neo-Nazi scene, is gradually losing her reputation because she incorporates feminist, sex-positive and queer elements into her music. Her former comrade Andi, the barkeeper at Friedrichshain's Stahlkappen Division, sees her as a traitor. But Konnie is convinced that she can change the scene from the inside out – a plan that is increasingly isolating her.
Rudi, a failed punk, is on the other side of the political spectrum. He is planning an attack on a Nazi bar to make a name for himself in the punk scene. But his unpredictable behaviour has already made him an outsider. His last friend, Cervezito, has turned away, his ex-partner Sandra and his son August are nothing but memories to him.
When Konnie meets Rudi, she sees him as an opportunity to become popular again with her old group. She skilfully manipulates him and uses his hatred for her own purposes. But while they are both exploiting each other, they fail to recognise that those around them have long since given up on them.
‘FLIEG STEIL’ does not show classic heroes or villains, but people who get entangled in their own contradictions. The plot does not follow a clear line, but repeats itself in patterns and motifs that show how the characters repeatedly stand in their own way. In the end, there are no winners – only the realisation that their struggle for meaning is in vain.
