    • Synopsis
    • It’s 2006, at the end of the Iraqi conflict, in the south of Iraq. This is the story of Stefania, a young nurse from Gela, Italy who is working as part of a humanitarian mission to help Iraqi children with cleft lips, a very common condition that, given the circumstances, is difficult to treat. The volunteers are forced to stay inside a protected compound and are forbidden from leaving because this is a war zone. But Stefania wants to leave: she wants to go into the city. Khaleed, the Iraqi interpreter she tries to lead astray, doesn’t want to go – he’s afraid. This isn’t a game. But Stefania insists and in the end, he agrees to take her. Evading the checkpoints, he accompanies her amongst the people of Nassiriya. She doesn’t say what she wants; he doesn’t ask many questions. That’s the agreement. She looks at this country, ripped to shreds by the war. She sees the desert, the barefooted children, the abandoned cars, and she thinks about her own country. The sea. Roberto. She hasn’t come here to be a volunteer. She’s brimming with rage and won’t be contented by just one trip to the city. She’s following a trail, looking for something… but what?
