In Le Havre, the bitter and methodic Pierre is a lonely man and the owner of a hardware store. Pierre collects bizarre worldwide news in an album as a hobby and his acquaintance Jeanne has an unrequited love for him, but Pierre is always evasive. One day, Pierre sees an Indian named Ajit being expelled from a taxi while he is watching ships passing in the harbour and he helps the man to stand up. Ajit does not speak French and shows a tattoo with an address on his arm. Pierre heads to the spot with Ajit and discover that the place belonged to Ajit's uncle that sold it three years ago. Pierre goes with Ajit to the police station, to the India's embassy and to an Indian neighborhood to seek out his uncle but it is a fruitless search. Pierre lodges Ajit in his house and after a series of incidents, he finds a delivery boy to translate Ajit and learns the dramatic story of his life.
