    • Synopsis
    • Set in 2003 Taipei during the global SARS epidemic, American Girl is a semi-autobiographical family drama that chronicles the life of thirteen-year-old Fen, who recently left Los Angeles with her younger sister and cancer-stricken mother. As her mother undergoes a lumpectomy, Fen is enrolled in an all-girl Catholic middle school where she finds herself ranked at the bottom of her class and mockingly given the name “American Girl” by fellow students. As Fen reconnects with her Taiwan-based father and learns to navigate her way through school, her turbulent bond with her mother worsens. Fen drifts further away from her mother through a series of rebellious acts before the misdiagnosis of her sister during the height of the pandemic pushes the family towards a long-gestating confrontation.
