    • Synopsis
    • Here are are the 21st Century amazons. All around the world young women fight alongside men, in armed forces ; in Timor, in Kurdistan, in Western countries. These warriors personify the emancipation of woman, the growing preponderance of technologies over pure strength, the fading of sexual differenciation and the evolution of social behavior .

But nowhere more than in Israel are the difficulties women warriors face, the necessary courage and the dilemmas they confront more acute. Israel is in a permanent state of war and the danger is real at all times. The society is both permissive and overly conservative a culturally divided country in the heart of a Middle East imbued with conservative religious beliefs and machismo. The Israeli population’s unmatched diversity of national and cultural origins – one can speak about a true Babel – are the source for dilemmas : a colored woman, an Arab woman, a Russian woman, could be subject to prejudice or may have to fight their brethen sometimes.

Beyond these difficulties, in cities like Tel Aviv, Israel is one of the most permissive in the world, with culture mores similar to what one finds in Amsterdam and San Francisco, where sexual tolerance, cultural or clothing patterns imply an extreme variety of situations and experiences.

There is a lso the political dilemma for these women soldiers who fight for the very survival of their country and culture in a violent region while at the same time but who also may be subject to doubts : they are often confronted with civilians, with families, with the dilemma of occupation, with the pressure of media and international opinion which may sometimes make them doubt about their involvement. They are also confronted with the consevatism of their surroundings, sometimes themselves coming from religious families which disapprove of their joining the army.
These young women are students, often studying at the graduate level, they aim for highly competitive jobs, for travelling around the world, for the best of lfe like all young people. They must instead edvote so much time in the army during their prime years. They are romantic and remain very young women under their exterior shell of hardened fighters. Some of them are conservative and dream to establish a family right after their military service.
This combination of circumstances creates a miscocosm of the youth of humankind in the early 21st Century : archaism, extreme modernity, violence, multiculturalism.

In Amazons, we follow several youg women serving in the same fighting unit, the Caracal battalion. (named after a wild cat whose sex is difficult to determine). This unit is mixed. Military service is compulsory for girls in Israel and lasts 2 years. But for fighting units like Caracal it lasts 3 years.

The series will follows women of diverse backgrounds and origins through their 3 year service, from the preparatory classes to their release from the army and the several months that follow where most
