By Gert-Peter BRUCH, Esmeralda OF BELGIUM, Sydney POSSUELO

PLANÈTE AMAZONE - as PROD

Environmental - Completed 2023

Mainly shot in Brazil, the film summarizes the extraordinary but still unfinished fight of four generations of indigenous leaders - including the mythical chief Raoni Metuktire - for the protection of the indigenous territories of Brazil. It is also a powerful call for the recognition of the ecocide

    • Synopsis
    • During the beginning of the Bolsonaro era, the Brazilian Amazon and its indigenous peoples have experienced one disaster after the other, as the murder in 2022 of Dom Phillips, the British journalist, and Bruno Pereira, the Brazilian indigenist has tragically demonstrated. As a result, deforestation in the Amazon has increased significantly, and wildcat miners, loggers and gold diggers have invaded many indigenous lands, poisoning soils and rivers. The Yanomami indigenous territory in northern Brazil is another sad example of a murderous policy under Bolsonaro. In four years, at least 570 children under five died, all from malnutrition, pneumonia, malaria and other infections directly caused by the exploitation of resources on protected indigenous lands. A "genocide" for Sonia Guajajara.

There is chaos in the rainforest, and scientists warn that we are ebbing increasingly closer to an "Amazon tipping point," given all these stresses on the forest.

In May 2022, Gert-Peter Bruch and Princess Esmeralda of Belgium went to Brazil to meet Chief Raoni who gave them a letter to be forwarded to the (then) candidate Lula. The main commitments requested by Nobel Peace prize nominee Raoni were fulfilled by Lula on the very first day of his new mandate, where he chose to have the Chief by his side. Later, the fulfillment of these promises was once again demonstrated by the appointment of an indigenous woman to head FUNAI, Joenia Wapichana.

The indigenous people are the last stand between preserving an ecosystem on which the world depends and its total collapse. Even though the election of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has brought hope, the challenges remain enormous in a deeply polarized country. But it’s not all up to Brazil. The fate of the Amazon rainforest is a concern for the entire world and will require support from global citizens if we want to achieve zero deforestation by 2030. Marina Silva, the new Minister for the environment, has called upon the international community to support Brazil in the preservation of the Amazonian forest, a world heritage.
