Erland Fjellgren is happily married to his wife May. He works down at the paper mill, this small northern Swedish community’s biggest employer, and a few evenings a week he and May lead an evening discussion group at the Pentecostal Church called the “The School of Marriage”, where couples can talk about all the problems that come up in a relationship. Both Erland and May are secure in the conviction that openness and communication are like a vaccine against failed relationships. However, one night Erland wakes up with a sudden craving for fried bananas; a dish, May says, their household cannot produce. Sven-Erik Bystedt is Erland’s workmate and friend. He is a sober alcoholic and has, with the help of his friend and mentor Erland, managed to leave behind his self-destructive lifestyle. Sven-Erik has recently married Karin. She is new to the community and only knows Erland and May from Sven-Erik’s description of them. He admires them both and has, like them, become an active member of the local Pentecostal Church. Karin, however, is not a member of the church.
