    • Synopsis
    • This is a story and production which shows the viewing audience an historical drama set against the cold war era. This is a story that explores how the American military made it difficult for African American soldiers to marry German women or even be officially recognized for their own children. Often these soldiers were re-assigned once senior management became aware of these children paternity. The mothers were often obstructed from contacting these soldiers and the soldiers were denied the right to marry the mothers due to the segregation laws at the time in the US. This making the search for the adoptive child difficult in finding who their biological parents are. An estimated 5,000 children with African-American fathers and Caucasian German mothers were born in Germany between 1945 and 1955.
Many German social service agencies were often left at a lost as how to deal with these so-called Besätzungskinder. Some of these children remained in Germany as social service agents felt these children’s lives would be better off in Germany as the U.S. was going through the struggle of the civil rights movement.
