    • Synopsis
    • Elisa (18) lives with her mother, Nélida (55), in a housing development located in a city that seems to exist out of time, where large-scale fumigations are conducted to keep a plague of venomous ants under control, pets have disappeared, and the population is mostly of an elderly age. The most illustrious youths are sent to the North, a sort of promised land where “history is being rewritten”. Elisa is the last young woman in her community and part of the group embarked in the induction process prior to going to the North. Nélida is a fan of the North, working double shifts to raise money and win an auction for a trip to the North; this is the only way an adult can travel there. Elisa’s elder sister was sent to the North before, and now her mother dreams of the three of them reuniting. The lethargic passing of the days is only altered by the presence of a new neighbor, Leonor (37), who catches Elisa’s and the rest of the residents’ attention due to her moaning while having sex with different visitors. Leonor is an intriguing woman who works as a nurse and has a prosthetic leg. She is interested in Elisa from the moment the two of them meet. Leonor will make Elisa discover that her smell is a treasure many are willing to pay for. The induction process is very thorough, as it is important to study the participants’ personality and skills in depth. But Elisa thinks that there is something that does not quite add up. The phone messages her sister has been leaving her since she went away are very cold; “Family holds you back,” she says. The North’s relentless quest for productivity, rigorousness and perfection gives Elisa reason for doubt. Nélida finds out her daughter is not taking part in the induction process. Agents from the North pressure Elisa and are willing to take her away even if she does not finish her induction; her rebelliousness seems to make her even more attractive to them. There seems to be no way out for Elisa.
