8 Views of Lake Biwa translates age-old Japanese love stories into the language of yearnings and desires of fishermen of Lake Peipus and their children. The mental state of the main characters is observed through eight poetic oriental motifs: sailing boats returning home, red glow of dusk, first snow, night rain, full moon in autumn, temple bell in evening, sudden draft, wild geese flying away. These motifs of beautiful sadness frame the eight intertwining unholy love stories, destroying the lovers and people around them. Spiritualizing of everything live and lifeless according to Japanese animism, comical shunga eroticism and humble village fatalism melt together into spiritual and magical world of a tiny community where they still believe that they are connected to the universe.
