    • Synopsis
    • On average, a Japanese citizen earns 230 million yen ($2 million) over his or her lifetime from birth to death. That is, people spend their entire life earnings to live, and then they die. But for Mirai Takatsuki, who suffers from a serious disease, life is the fruit of a gift of 500 million yen ($5 million) collected and donated by the citizenry that saved him. He now tries to lead a healthy life as a normal high school teen. But high expectations of those around him and constant media attention are a heavy burden that cloud his adolescence and make life feel hollow. One day, he receives a text message that reads: “You’d be better off quitting… a life like that.” When Mirai snaps back with: “I’ll die, then. Just watch me,” the follow up is even more devastating. “Don’t be stupid. You don’t even have the right to die.”
People spend their entire life earnings to live, and then they die. Mirai’s life is not his own. It belongs to those who invested 500 million to save it. If so, Mirai, thinks, “Then all I have to do is pay that money back.” With that, he leaves home and embarks on a journey to earn money for the right to die. But to do so, he must confront life.
