Synopsis
Rodolfo is almost 50. He is an odontologist and likes to play soccer, something he does very well. For the past 10 years he has lived with his second wife in a nice apartment. Rodolfo has a daughter from his first marriage, Ana, who has just turned 16. Ana lives with her mother, Graciela, who is in her 40’s, in a old small apartment. The film begins on the day of Ana’s sixteenth birthday. Rodolfo calls his daughter, like every other year. It is a cold conversation, more awkward than loving. That day Rodolfo returns to his apartment and goes to play soccer with his stepson. After the game, sweating and dressed in his soccer garments, Rodolfo decides to visit his daughter. This is his first contact with Ana and Graciela in quite a long time and it marks his return to their lives. Little by little we will start finding out that Rodolfo is a stranger in his own house and feels the no one needs him there anymore. The idea of approaching Ana and Graciela, as if these last ten years hadn’t been but some simple holidays, seduces him. Ana has just turned 16, she plays handball and is very pretty. She has a boyfriend with whom she is discovering sex. But above all, Ana is discovering her power over men. She is not interested in highschool or handball. She seldom attends and when she does she is usually late. At school her classmates are collecting funds for the end-of-year trip. Ana is warned by the school’s authorities that if she keeps on like this, she will fail the year due to absences and she won’t be allowed to go on the trip. Ana doesn’t seem to do anything to change this situation and starts wandering alone, doing nothing but listen to music. We witness the time when Ana starts delineating her personality. Coexistence with Rodolfo is strangely comforting for her, as she doesn’t remember having lived with her father before. Rodolfo indulges her and she uses him. Graciela never lived with any other man after Rodolfo. Her life goes by without major surprises, split between work and looking after her daughter, who is obviously less and less dependent on her. The times they spend together smoking and watching TV are the ones Graciela likes best. Graciela’s life is altered by the hospitalization of her eighty-year old aunt. Graciela has to split her time between work and caring for her aunt, who is in intensive care. At hospital Graciela meets Dustin, a hired therapeutic nurse who is looking after another patient in the same ward. Dustin is a little younger than her and makes her feel secure, which is what she needs right now. Graciela engages in a relationship with Dustin that lasts even after she doesn’t have to go to hospital any more. When her aunt is discharged and returns home Graciela keeps looking after her and she starts having romantic encounters with Dustin, as if they were teenagers. At a certain point, Graciela only thinks of Dustin and of this sort of renewed youthfulness she is experiencing. This is the small, tragi-comic story of three characters. A strange yet ordinary group. Rodolfo, Graciela and Ana: a family.
