In their escapade, they fall exhausted and are rescued by Valda, a generous and deeply religious lady who offers them temporary shelter in an old house next to her farm. Etevaldo and Maria claim to be husband and wife fleeing from bloody family conflicts. They win their hostess’ confidence. In the meantime, Etevaldo finds work in a vineyard. Maria transforms their house into their home. Valda becomes attached to the couple as if they were her own family. When Ribamar, a police officer and Valda’s nephew, appears on the farm and says he is investigating a woman's kidnapping, Etevaldo fears that they will be discovered and prepares to leave.
