- Synopsis
- Agreste tells a story of love and intolerance in the Brazilian hinterland. Etevaldo (40) is a lonely rural worker, who lives a nomadic life and guards a secret. While working in a nearby sugarcane field, he meets Maria (22), a free-spirited young woman whose conservative family has promised in marriage to another man. They fall in love. When Etevaldo is about to leave, Maria decides to run away with him. In their escapade, they fall exhausted and are rescued by Valda, a generous and deeply religious lady who offers them temporary shelter in an old house next to her farm. Etevaldo and Maria claim to be husband and wife fleeing from bloody family conflicts. They win their hostess’ confidence. In the meantime, Etevaldo finds work in a vineyard. Maria transforms their house into their home. Valda becomes attached to the couple as if they were her own family. When Ribamar, a police officer and Valda’s nephew, appears on the farm and says he is investigating a woman's kidnapping, Etevaldo fears that they will be discovered and prepares to leave. Maria is reluctant at first, but Ribamar’s threats and romantic interest in her spur them to escape. The policeman chases them and kills Etevaldo. During the preparation of the body for burial a secret is revealed, arising the anger of the community against the couple, claiming blasphemy. Oblivious to hatred, Maria tries to say goodbye to her beloved, while the community reveals their fury.
