    • Synopsis
    • María and Manuel live a completely monotonous and boring life. They need money to make
      true a dream they have been postponing for years. On New Year's Eve, they go to spend a
      few days at the country house of Manuel's sister, Ana, and her partner, Julio. They are two
      ontological coaches who live in a completely different way; they are adventurous, modern
      and charismatic.This couple leads a community of young people who profess a spiritual
      doctrine according to which any goal is possible, as long as there is a deep and genuine
      desire behind it. Julio and Ana invite María and Manuel to join this new life, but María
      suspects that they are hiding something under the appearance of balance and well-being.
      Little by little, the relationships between the characters begin to strain and living together
      becomes difficult.
      On New Year's Eve, Manuel experiences a traumatic event that makes him unable to
      remember what happened in the last few hours, and he begins to behave in a completely
      strange way. From that moment on, the film begins to veer towards a much more dense and
      disturbing atmosphere.
      "What happened on New Year's Eve" is a sinister comedy, which maintains the tension
      between the characters from beginning to end, oscillating with the Horror genre without
      becoming solemn.The characteristics of its main characters and the language they use, with
      references to popular culture, clearly describe the Argentine idiosyncrasy. Although this film
      is notoriously grounded in its country, it becomes a piece loaded with universal themes due
      to the conflicts it narrates, such as the questioning of motherhood and upbringing, the social
      inequality of both couples, Maria's overwhelm at not being allowed to even fantasize about
      personal development, Manuel's rootedness to tradition and historical mandates, the
      phenomenon of Ontological Coaching and Pyramid Schemes, or the hypocrisy of Julio and
      Ana's meritocratic speech combined with the ostentation and wastefulness of their social
      class.
      "What Happened on New Year's Eve" is a production that moves from an everyday tone to a
      dreamlike one, showing the singular look of the Director who, plainly, flirts with monstrous
      characterizations and grotesque scenarios The original music refers to the Italian Horror
      films of the 70's, creating intense moods that enhance the performance of the protagonists,
      where the Director puts the focus of his directorial debut.
