- Synopsis
- France, Bazoches Castle. 1712.
  Martí Zuviría is the pupil of the Marquis de Vauban, the best teacher in the art of defending and storming cities.
  One day, Marshall James Berwick, an ambitious and unscrupulous British soldier serving under King Louis XIV of France arrives at the castle. Impressed by the enormous talent of young Martí, Berwick aims to enlist him into his army, but Martí rejects his proposal, enraging Berwick. To reach a settlement, the Marquis proposes they fight a duel at the “relief articulé”, a practice model for the siege of fortified cities.
  But on the day of the duel, Martí makes a fatal mistake that leads him to lose the game. Martí is then forced to flee Bazoches, his studies unfinished: he cannot get the Marquis de Vauban, on his deathbed, to grant him the post of engineer officer. Martí has failed to answer the key question that his mentor asked him to resolve: summarise in a single word the best defence of a besieged city.
  Arriving at his hometown of Barcelona, he realises that the city is mobilizing for war against the Bourbon army. Perplexed, he observes how all the people, both civilian and military, decide to resist the siege, closing the doors of the city and organizing for combat. There he meets Amelia, a beautiful young prostitute with a six-year-old son, with whom he will live with a passionate love affair while under constant attack from the enemy army.
  Thanks to his knowledge, Martí is recruited by General Villarroel, a Castilian fighting for the locals, convinced that his compatriots will commit genocide in the name of an unjust cause.
  And Barcelona is the main objective of Philip V, who sent Marshall Berwick to raze it. He wants to put an end once and for all to the strength of this city, the one which has resisted most throughout history.
  This time Martí Zuviría has a second chance to prove, not only to Berwick who is the better military engineer, but also to discover the word he could not give in answer to his teacher and to become the greatest engineer of all time...
