    • Synopsis
    • Roger Spottiswoode (Tomorrow Never Dies, The 6th Day) will direct The Precious One; the inspirational true story of former Olympian Precious McKenzie MBE (Kevin Hart); the pocket dynamo who once famously hoist the legendary Muhammad Ali on his shoulders and was knighted by the Queen of England. This is the ultimate underdog story and a testimony to one man’s indomitable spirit. The film follows how this amazing athlete overcame incredible odds to escape poverty, violence and racial hatred in apartheid South Africa. While still an infant, Precious’ father is killed by a crocodile. Unable to cope with grinding poverty, Precious’ mother turns to drink and loses custody of her children. Precious and his little sister Gloria are placed in the care of foster parents who treat them like slaves. In his early adulthood, Precious accidentally discovers his gift for weightlifting. He recognises the sport is his only chance to lift himself out of destitution and rise above the politics of racial discrimination. Early in his weightlifting career, Precious meets Elizabeth, a beautiful coloured girl who is as spirited and feisty as he is. They fall in love and, after a whirlwind romance, marry. Precious competes in national tournaments and quickly establishes himself as the best weightlifter in South Africa. Despite his total dominance in the sport, his skin colour prevents him from representing his country. But the closer Precious gets to competing at the Olympics, the more obstacles are placed in his path by the white South African Government. In his late twenties, and sensing that his best years are slipping away, he decides to migrate to England in the desperate hope he can compete internationally. Almost penniless, Precious flees from South Africa with Elizabeth to make one last-ditch attempt to receive the recognition he deserves. The colourful, larger-than-life lead character adds to this motion picture’s appeal. Now aged 73, Precious McKenzie is fondly remembered by many around the world for his outstanding achievements. His life story ranks right up there beside history’s greatest examples of the human spirit triumphing over immense hardship.
