    • Synopsis
    • 1926: On board the airship Norge, the Italian airship engineer and pilot Commander Umberto Nobile sets out on a Trans-Arctic expedition with famed Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen. They become the first to reach the North Pole in an airship and the first to cross the Arctic ocean. Afterwards, an argument breaks out between Amundsen and Nobile. Amundsen reminds Nobile that he is merely a paid pilot and refuse to credit him as one of the expedition leaders. Nobile is of the opinion that Amundsen was just a passenger on the airship Nobile designed. What should be a joyous occasion for all is sullied by pride and ego.
1928: Sixteen men depart on an adventurous expedition to the North Pole in the airship Italia, to bring glory to Italy and progress to science. Umberto Nobile, promoted to General after the Norge trip, aims to best Roald Amundsen by landing at the North Pole, but all goes awry when the airship crashes on the hostile pack ice. General Nobile is stranded with eight survivors and his dog Titina. With some members of the multi-national crew (Italian, Swedish, Norwegian, Czech) too injured to attempt travel by foot, the long wait starts, all hopes hanging on the SOS signal they are able to send. The international rescue mission faces many difficulties - bad weather, coordination problems and millions of square miles to search. Three of the survivors, among them Swedish meteorologist Finn Malmgren, cannot stand the wait and wager an attempt to fetch help; only two survive. Roald Amundsen sacrifices his life trying to find his former adversary. In a much-debated turn of events, the injured General Nobile is rescued first. When Swedish rescue pilot Einar Lundborg returns to fetch the next man, he crash-lands on the ice and is now stranded with others. He is flown out by fellow Swede Birger Schyberg, but the ice is now too thin to land again. After many mishaps, the survivors are rescued by the Russian icebreaker Krassin after 49 days on the ice.
