    • Synopsis
    • What is true and what is false – and does it really matter? In The Last Communist Amir Muhammad continues his investigation of Malaysia’s history and its multifaceted identity, this time from the viewpoint of the leader of the Communist Party, Chin Peng. This was clearly not appreciated by the government who banned the screening of the film just before its premiere.
In practice Chin Peng is only a front for Muhammad’s interviews with people telling about their everyday lives, dreams and memories of the past. Communism is revealed as a pragmatic tool, adapted for the present needs.
Because of his essayistic and hybrid style, social awareness and love for the man in the street, Amir Muhammad has been compared to filmmakers of the French cinema of the late 50’s and 60’s. The Last Communist is obstinate, fun and ironic, a sensational mix of musical and documentary road-movie. Imagine a lesson in the colonial history of Malaysia and especially composed songs in the mould of old-fashioned propaganda, sung in a cheesy karaoke style.
