    • Synopsis
    • The day the favela came down has been wiped from history, but took place amidst the atmosphere of political polarization in the period that preceded the military coup in Brazil, between 1962 and 1964. A resident of the Morro do Borel community, the young samba musician Ezequiel, and the wealthy lawyer Magarinos Torres, led a people’s protest against the state and business interests that were evicting working people from the city’s favelas. Through Ezequiel’s journey, the film tells the story of the largest uprising in the history of the Rio favelas, the day when more than 1,200 workers and favela residents invaded city hall. The film’s depiction of this era explores the harsh daily life of the residents of the favela, the warmth and passion of the world of samba and the behind the scenes machinations of political and financial power and the Brazilian justice system. The strategies used to combat police repression, such as loudspeakers on lampposts and tactics of occupation, draw parallels with the resistance movement and social problems that continue in Brazil today. All these events are flavored by samba, which serves as the guiding theme and soundtrack of the production.
