    • Synopsis
    • 1906: The Dominican Republic lived in chaos due to war between two political parties.
      On a night of full moon, Mr. Thormann, a German settler, hosts a party in honor
      of the Virgin Mary, patron saint of the Dominican people. The guests enjoy their
      polkas while the children look on behind the gallery porch. Ramon, a ten year
      old boy, and his friends, run back to their village when they hear the drums that precede
      the Virgin’s procession. Next day Ramón's mother sends him on an errand and is kidnapped
      by the Blue Army to serve the nation by force.
      1910: A battle between the Red and Blue armies. Canons fire a and Ramon, now a tall and strong soldier,
      serves as ammunitions carrier and piston rifles loader. A canon blast, ends the battle for
      Ramon and his Spanish protector and gunsmith, nicknamed: "España". Their army’s defeat makes them
      change sides and now they fight for the Red army until España is killed in battle and Ramon is wounded holding his image of the Virgin Mary.
      1916: The League of Dominican Women are protesting on the colonial streets of Santo Domingo
      against the landing of north-american marine troops. They carry signs and shout patriotic
      slogans. A young mulato woman, Mina Caceres, heads the party at full voice, “Long live the Republic, no to the invasion of our land”. Two young men, one black, one white, are trying on clothes at a store, and as they leave, have an shooting argument with a group of Blue Army soldiers. Ramon is arrested by US marine soldiers, escapes and joins a group of ex-soldiers that are fighting against the occupation forces.
      The american troops are burning villages and establishing concentration camps where they hold the populationin the East. The "gavilleros" or "bandits", as the americans called them, fight the best they can with old weapons. Ramon becomes leader of the group and are denounced as bandits. Marine Captain Merkle intensifies the hunt for Ramon and his men and with the aid of a traitor finds and storms the rebel camp. After a long battle the marines kill all the patriots and Ramon dies with his Colt revolver in one hand and on the other his medal of the Virgin Mary.
