    • Synopsis
    • Sacred Defense takes place at the Iranian front during the Iran‐Iraq war in '80s. Reza Motaheri is a devoted fighter under the command of Haj Seyed Abbas. He has the difficult task of mentally preparing the soldiers for the bloody battlefields through prayer and religious chants and thereby eliminating their fears and doubts in the process.
Despite his faith and his conviction that they are fighting for a holy cause, Reza has doubts about the tactic and the enormous sacrifices of soldiers. His nagging dissatisfaction surfaces when his 13‐year old son Amin reports to the battlefront. Although he is too young to fight, Amin has made his way to the front and has secretly joined the volunteers. Even the thought of sending his own son into battle is too much for Reza. He becomes embroiled in a heated discussion with Amin and forbids his son to fight and orders him to return to his grandparents. But Amin cannot understand that his own father doesn’t want him to fight, since it was his father who ignited the sacred fire inside the boy.
The discussion turns into a brutal confrontation as Reza tries to make Amin understand what dying for your country really means. Abbas intervenes and points out that Reza is fighting the wrong battle: it’s not his son that he has to be concerned with, but his own faith in God. The army commander leaves Reza, broken and alone. He needs to realize that he has been put in this situation by God to be tested. He has to decide: unconditional faith or the life of his son.
