Spanning the years 1642-1660, “Out of the Flames” traces the life of Judith, a poor peasant girl, separated from her family in the chaos of the English Civil War. Sold into prostitution, Judith travels the country with a band of masterless artisans, servicing the men of Cromwell’s New Model Army, learning to take a pragmatic view of life. Fearing for her newborn daughter, Judith murders her pimp and travels to London where she seeks to improve her circumstance. On her travels, she encounters radical political groups, Diggers, Levellers and Ranters, who wish to seize on the chaos of the times and overthrow the social economic order.
