    • Toronto. August 5, 2015. The Toronto International Film Festival announced today that O NEGATIVE, the horror short written and directed by acclaimed actor, musician and theatre-maker, Steven McCarthy, will have its world premiere in the Shortcuts Programme of the 40th edition of the festival this September.

A sick young woman and the man who takes care of her find shelter in a roadside motel and take the necessary steps to feed her addiction. O NEGATIVE is a wordless, intriguing examination of desire and early notices are calling it “truly striking stuff from a promising new talent.” (Twitchfilm)

Last seen at TIFF playing opposite Tatiana Maslany in Kate Melville’s award-winning feature, Picture Day, McCarthy also produced O NEGATIVE, and plays the leading role. His co-star is National Theatre School of Canada-trained newcomer, Alyx Melone, making her film debut.

O NEGATIVE , a dreamlike, near-silent 15 minute film in the tradition of Under the Skin, is an unsettling love story about blood thirst and co-dependency. The film’s cinematographer is festival favourite Cabot McNenly (The Animal Project,You are Here) and its editor is one of Quebec’s most exciting filmmakers, Stéphane Lafleur (Continental – Un film sans fusils – TIFF 2007 Best First Feature, Tu Dors Nicole –Cannes festival, Director’s Fortnight, editor of Monsieur Lazhar – Oscar nomination for Best
Foreign Film). Music for the film was composed by VIVIO (Gordon Hyland and Sam McLellan) and the sound design is by Aaron Mirkin (director of Crazy House, and We are Not Here).

Writer/director Steven McCarthy is an acclaimed actor, director, and musician. He was the sole candidate selected to take part in a special, one-year directing intensive at The National theatre school of Canada. His productions of "Bliss," Malaria Lullaby," and "Boblo" used elements of circus, dance, trapeze, and concert and earned multiple awards across the country. He has played leading roles for such directors as Guillermo del Toro, Ken Finkelman, Kate Melville and Robert Harmon. The ElastoCitizens, McCarthy's ten piece funk-rock band play a reunion show this September in Toronto. “o negative” is his first film.

McCarthy will also be at TIFF 2015 as one of the stars of The Steps, (world premiering in the Contemporary World Cinema programme) sharing the screen with Christine Lahti, James Brolin, Emmanuelle Chriqui and Jason Ritter.
