    • Synopsis
    • Zezé, who is about 8, lives with his family in the country side. His parents are factory workers and he is the fourth child in a family of five. They are all simple minded, poorly educated. But Zezé is different. He is sensitive. He is trouble!
Nothing gives him more fun than transforming his neighborhood into a setting for his many irresponsible tricks. However, except for his sister, Glória, who knows that he has a good soul, Zezé has no allies and is beaten up with no mercy.
In an attempt to put up with all that, Zezé uses his huge imagination. He chats with a little bird who lives inside his chest; he takes his little brother for walks in a fantastic zoo at the backyard of his own house…But his last refuge perhaps is the simplest, yet the most beautiful of all his fantasies: his Sweet Orange Tree, a small sapling he calls Minguinho With Minguinho, he shares the bad things that happen to him, celebrates good news and shares his most secret tricks. Minguinho is the most understanding of the inanimate beings, in a world where human beings don’t seem to understand him very much.
And suddenly, the unexpected happens: the most beautiful friendship is born out of human compassion. Manuel Valadares, the ‘foreigner’, the most frightening person in the neighborhood, will give Zezé the attention and understanding that he eagerly cares for. For Zezé, Manuel is a sweet refuge who helps him to put up with a life of domestic violence.
But their friendship is brutally interrupted by an accident that kills the old foreigner. To Zezé, all that is left is incredulity, abandon and a deep sadness. He feels sick for weeks. Decisive weeks for the Vasconcelos: while Zezé’s world falls apart, his father finds a job and plans their move to a better house. But at that point, it is already too late for Zezé to believe that he can find happiness among his family. He has changed. A writer is about to be born...
