    • Synopsis
    • Born from a noble family in 1552 in Macerata, a medieval city center of Italy, Matteo was immediately fascinated by the human and Christian education received by the Jesuits. He abandoned his studies of law and entered the Society of Jesus: he will not see his parents again for the rest of his life.
After studying theology at Cohimbra (Portugal), Matteo learned the method of inculturation of the faith in Goa (India) and in 1582 he went to Macao to study the Chinese language and to be prepared to enter into the "New World".
Matthew (Li Madou) became then close friends with the Confucian scholar Chu T'aion, who taught him the basics of mathematics and how to improve the use of language and gain the confidence of tangerines and imperial officicers.
In that period he realized that through Confucius it was possible to evangelize China.
He died in Beijing in 1610. His contributions were fully recognized by the Emperor Wanli: for the first time in history, a burial land was granted to a foreigner. His remains lie in the cemetery of Zhalan, in the same area that now constitutes the grounds of the School of Administration in Beijing.
