    • Synopsis
    • Kamihate - it is a name of a town, meaning lands end, with a precipitous cliff known as a place for suicide. Chiyo, an ageing woman who has lost her mother to cancer, lives in this town alone, running an obsolete shop which keeps losing custom. A bus stops outside her shop at the same time every day, and sometimes a stranger steps out. They always buy a bread roll that Chiho bakes and milk at her shop as their "last supper" before heading for the cliff to jump. Chiyo sees them off without saying anything to them, and she goes to the cliff top on the following day to collect a pair of shoes and an empty milk bottle. Their worn out shoes, in different colors and sizes, are stored by Chiyo as if being put to bed.
One day a young mother with a little girl come to the shop. Unusual for Chiyo, she stops them going to the cliff top, but despite her efforts the two kill themselves at a later date by jumping onto the railway track.
The feeling of helplessness makes Chiyo decide to close the shop, but she begins baking bread again after an event and starts taking steps towards her own revival.
