    • There are only women and children in this Armenian village.Their husbands and sons have all left the village in search of work. The women maintain the daily routine of taking the cows to the field at dawn for grazing and then spend the rest of the day working in the fields. It's Mariam's birthday. Her friends surprise her with a birthday cake.
But Anush, their younger, pregnant friend, is absent, she feels unwell again. Lilik, the group’s realist, complains that Anush is lost in daydreams, thinking that her husband will be back before the birth of their firstborn. Lilik is certain that Anush will share the fate of the other women in the village, whose husbands have left the village for work and have not returned. Mariam is more optimistic. Her husband is planning to return in two weeks. However, when he calls that night he breaks the news that he won’t be returning any time soon.
It is late at night and Mariam is sleepless in bed when she gets a call. Anush is in labour pains but refuses to go to the hospital because her husband isn’t there yet. Now Mariam, who has lost all hope of having a full family again, has to convince Anush that everything will be ok for her. Whether she believes in that or not, Anush’s and her unborn baby’s life depends on Mariam’s lie.
