    • A fifteen-year-old Pakistani girl with magical powers arrives in suburban Canada in hopes of a better future for her kind. Fara casts spells, communes with water, but she suffers unpleasant side effects when she uses her powers. Her mother, Ruby helps her hone her skills in their magical kitchen, while her father, Alam pursues the job market unsuccessfully under the suspicious eyes of diabolical Aunty Kaniz. Fara must learn to juggle hormones and potions within an increasingly conservative culture that is constantly at odds with her. It is a tug-of war between the new and the old worlds, as Fara makes new friends and learns the secrets of the past, the power of her magic and why she can’t trust anyone but herself in her new adopted homeland.
