    • DIVINE DIVAS, the directorial debut of acclaimed Brazilian actress Leandra Leal, documents the legendary first generation of Brazilian transvestite performers and drag artists of the 1960’s, who bravely challenged rigid morals and conservatism at the height of a military dictatorship of Brazil. Their home was the Rival Theatre in Rio de Janeiro, a trailblazing club that was one of the first venues to embrace transvestite and drag artists, founded by Américo Leal, the grandfather of DIVINE DIVAS director Ms. Leal. Through vibrant archival footage and performances, and humorous contemporary interviews, we observe the 50-year careers of these iconic performers both on-stage and off, leading to a deep understanding of their lives as a work of art, a political act, and a defining moment in the struggle for human rights and individual freedom in the Brazil of yesterday and today.
