    • Synopsis
    • “Defending the Rock” is a story of courage, endurance and perseverance. Britain defends “The Rock” true - but in reality it is “The Rock” that has defended Britain. This 6 x 60 historical documentary tells how Gibraltar, over three centuries, has stood firm against invaders and was Britain’s first line of defence. In production, with full support from HM Government of Gibraltar, and London’s Imperial War Museum we tell, with archive, first hand interviews and reconstructions, the untold story of wartime heroics, espionage, subversion, isolation and mass evacuations. We also tell the stories of the people of Gibraltar, the tunnel network dug by Canadians, which housed future US President Eisenhower’s direction of Operation Torch in 1942. We investigate the mysterious 1943 death of Free Polish leader Sikorsky, and the stories of bombings, human torpedoes, and Allied escape routes run by the Polish and French resistance, whilst guarding, for the Allies, the gateway to the Mediterranean, under the ever watchful eyes of Nazi Germany’s Axis ally – fascist Spain.
