    • Jan, the exiled son of a farmer, is trapped in a Swedish life of lies until their phone rings one day and his teenage daughter Minna answers, and they’re confronted by an uncomfortable truth when Jan’s mother blurts out she is in the midst of a farm attack by a vicious gang. His wife Karin had no idea that Jan was South African. She finds his lack of disclosure about his past must hide more dark secrets, which he has kept from her. Jan is forced to return to his homeland in the ripples of this deceitful revelation.

He arrives to a changed South Africa, to their farm Bloemspruit to find his mother Martha killed and Ben, his father paralysed by the attackers and he has to take care of him. When Ben is released from hospital, Jan comes face to face with the origin of his grief, motivating him to muster the inner strength to both challenge and forgive this man he hated for so long, while gathering courage to confront their attackers.

Ruled by crooked politicians and corrupt police, Jan has to choose between finding his mother’s killers himself or joining the violent and military Farmwatch, run by one of his former army buddies, Zack Pretorius. He decides to face the lesser of two evils and approaches the police detective in charge of his parent’s case, only to find out he’s is unwilling to help.

The drama culminates when Jan is confronted with his childhood friend Steven B from the farmworkers village, that is in fact his brother, from a relationship his father had with their house-help and indirectly responsible for the attack on his parents, the death of his mother and eventual death of Ben, their loved and hated father.

Who does he turn to when there is no one to trust? Even his broken father has only prejudice and racism to offer. For the first time in his life, Jan has to face himself as well as the actions of his ancestors. Will he be able to track down his mother’s killers on his own? Will he be able to return to his wife Karin and repair the damage he’s lie created? Will he be able to make peace with his brutal past, and with his father? Will he be part of the broken country’s solution? Or will he only add to its downfall? This is the story of Blood Calls – Roots Run Deep.
