    • Synopsis
    • After decades of peace, there is still a sharp divide between Croatians and Bosnians living in Mostar, in Bosnia & Herzegovina.
Through no fault of his own, Slavko, a Croatian Catholic, no longer sees his Bosnian Muslim friends. They are separated, not by a physical barrier, but by mutual suspicion and distrust.
When his old Muslim friend Đulaga dies, Slavko knows he should go to the funeral. If his neighbours see him fraternizing with the ‘other side’, however, there may be a heavy price to pay. On the otherhand, his wife firmly believes that he should ‘do the right thing’ – and in his heart of hearts, he feels the same. If he fails to pay his respects, he will have failed as a friend, as a husband, and as a human being.
In this city, crossing the invisible line that divides the two communities is never straightforward, and finding the courage to cross that line is harder than Slavko would like to admit.
A Stranger is a film about one long day in Slavko’s life. As the day unfolds, the routine events of everyday life take on a greater significance, and he is forced to walk a difficult line between decency and paranoia, old friendships and new allegiances.
Slavko’s journey across town, and its aftermath, is the story of a man at war with himself. Sometimes quietly dramatic, sometimes comic but always emotionally honest and compelling, it shows us a man who feels like a stranger in the city where he has spent his entire life. It is the portrait of a man who lost his friends, his history and all his certainties about who he really is – when his country disintegrated.
It is also the story of an ordinary man torn between a desire to do the right thing, and a growing sensation of confusion about where he belongs, and where his true loyalties lie.
