Ian Cameron, one of Britain’s wealthiest industrialists, learns that his only son, an American photojournalist, has been kidnapped by ISIL while on an assignment with the Kurdish Peshmerga. He decides to hire the services of a London-based security company specializing in high-risk interventions on the recommendation of the security services, which also provide an MI6 case officer called Tim to surreptitiously advise him.

A rescue team is quickly recruited from what is known in London as ‘the circuit’, a term used for ex-military contractors supplying freelance security services.

The rescue team leader is Samantha (Sam) Holloway, an ex-Intelligence Corps Captain and ‘special duties’ soldier still quietly suffering from both a broken marriage and her experiences in both Baghdad and Helmand. The story follows Sam as she confronts her inner demons and doubts, while leading the team of ex-military specialists seeking to find the hostage-holding cell and rescue the client’s son.

The main plot unfolds over a one-month period after ISIS has seized the hostage. The team primarily attempts to gather intelligence on the hostage holders from radical Islamist elements in London.

The preparation and final rescue takes place against the backdrop of a burgeoning love affair between Sam and Taff (one of her team), While the team prepares for the operation it works closely with the Kurdish spy agency, the ‘Asayish’, and their commander ‘Col Tommy Talibani’ who agrees to time the hostage rescue with a planned offensive against Islamic State while providing members of his elite Peshmerga Commando unit to assist in the hostage rescue.

At the same time the plot covers an MI5 source recruited by Ahmad, a British Asian and Muslim MI5 agent, of a returning British Jihadi called Imran who is implicated in war crimes, as he tries to return home to London from Syria. Once the location of the prisoner is confirmed other military specialists augment the team as they prepare to snatch back the hostage from certain death at the hands of the Islamic State
