    • Synopsis
    • Joseph Marti is a bookbinder at a sheltered workshop. He is unremarkable in every way. A turning point in his life comes when his supervisor shoves a badly-glued book in his face. Joseph quits his job, but it seems that it makes no difference to anyone whether he comes to work or not. Time is also irrelevant in this story, with bygone times bleeding into the present-day as Joseph moves back and forth between the present and the past without giving it a second thought.
A contemporary employment office refers Joseph to the turn-of-the-century Evening Star Villa in the suburbs of Barenswil, where he starts work as an assistant to Engineer Tobler, an inventor who is designing an “advertising clock.” As a factotum, he is in charge of the bookkeeping and the correspondence and gradually becomes the confidante, and perhaps the lover of the lady of the house. His primary duty, however, is to “believe in the vision” of his employer, Tobler.
Joseph obediently does what he is told. All he cares about is keeping his position, even at the cost of his freedom.
But in a capitalist systém it seems increasingly unlikely that Tobler will ever achieve his ambitious business plans. The family's financial situation becomes desperate. In the face of growing tension in the Toblers' marriage and the abuse to which he is exposed, Joseph Marti decides to leave.
