    • Synopsis
    • “Desires of the Heart” is a story of story of a beautiful young woman who was being forced by her own community people to commit suicide after the accidental death of her husband by jumping into the funeral pyre of her husband. The story tells about a real dark-side of the most colorful state, Rajasthan, India. DR KRIS, an Indian Doctor settled in USA, meets a beautiful girl MADELEINE, an Artist. A chance meeting with her turns into a regular affair as the doctor is completely taken over by her charm. Madeleine takes him around in the city of Savannah, Georgia and invites him to her painting exhibition. A prominent SATI painting in the show draws Kris’ attention and he wonders how an American girl could paint an age old Indian tradition without ever being in India? How could she visualize an Indian Woman burning, on the funeral pyre of her dead husband?? She tell him about some real stories of India, her grandpa used to tell her. The story travels to India... Kris’ parents want him to visit India to see a girl Lena, whom they have selected for his marriage. Lena is a cultured girl who loves dancing and Kris comes to India. Kris undergoes a strange experience since the day he landed in Rajasthan, India. He often spends sleepless nights and comes across an unknown Woman in Red in his dreams - who seems to haunt him. He wants to explore it and Finally, Kris with his brother Pradyot discovers a remote village which no longer exists on any map and the truth that one hundred and eighty years previously, actually a young woman was being forced to commit suicide after the death of her husband. India has witnessed so many such SATI incidents before, in the male dominance society the woman has to sacrifice always, and this used to happen in the most colorful state of Rajasthan, this serious issue is being portrayed in a light manner, full of Drama and suspense along with the message towards the woman empowerment issue. Note: SATI is the term used for those women who commits suicide after husband’s death.
