    • On the morning of March 5, 2013, the old couple, Ompore and his wife Bogueney, was speared to death while walking near their village within the Yasuní National Park in Ecuador. The victims belonged to the indigenous Waorani group who lives in the area. An elderly woman who witnessed the attack said the assailants belonged to a clan of Taromenane , a branch of the Waorani who split contact with Waoranis and the outside world in the 1950s and since then voluntary have chosen to live isolated in the forests of Yasuní as nomads.
Violent clashes and killings between the groups have regularly been taking place but with the increased pressure from the oil and timber industry the tension is rising between the groups.
