STEFAN, a biologist specializing in neuropharmocology, accidentally stumbles upon a drug that can increase IQ at an almost alarming rate whilst trying to develop a treatment for anxiety. Not wanting his discovery (and the credit for it) to be taken from him until he is ready to release it to the wider scientific community, Stefan decides to keep it a secret. LUMPS, the janitor at the lab, is the only other person who knows about the experiment, as it was he who discovered that Rosie the ape was developing unusual intelligence. He has to be kept quiet, but instead of money he asks to be dosed up with the ‘smart medicine’. Stefan understands the amorality of human testing, but in the end he agrees. The first injection sends Lumps temporarily insane, and he goes running off into the night. The next day, however, he returns to the lab, and the experiment continues at Stefan’s house. Lumps becomes more and more intelligent until he finally outsmarts his creator.
