    • Synopsis
    • What happens when three comedians travel to the United States to get 50 tons of marijuana to smuggle into their country? From this question arises the first mockumentary comedy film ever made about the world of legal marijuana.

The comedians also made real life encounters with Uruguayan officials, including the president, to make the mission look real. The result is both absurd and hilarious.

Alfredo Rodríguez, the Director of the 'Uruguayan Chamber of Legal Marijuana', is sent to the United States by president José Mujica on an “Unofficial Mission” to find marijuana to supply Uruguay after it is fully legalized. Throughout the film, Alfredo meets the most influential leaders concerning marijuana and has real-life encounters with them. All of the characters believe they are interacting with the actual Director of the Uruguayan Chamber of Legal Marijuana, even though the institution doesn't really exist.

The mission starts in Denver, where Alfredo and his mother Talma (his real mother who never saw marijuana before) attend the 420 Rally, a political pro-legalization event that celebrates cannabis culture, as well as the Cannabis Cup, the world's foremost cannabis festival. Alfredo and Talma participate in both events, give conferences and set up a Uruguayan stand at the Cannabis Cup. They also visit a Grow Shop where they try to buy 50 tons of marijuana. They find out that buying it is an easy deal, but transporting it back to Uruguay is a different story. It is illegal and will be considered trafficking.

Disappointed by this discovery, Alfredo and Talma travel to New York and Washington D.C. where reinforcement arrives. Tato Olmos, a fake “Uruguayan Chief of Police”, joins them for the most challenging part of the journey. The financial and political capitals of the U.S become the setting where these three characters explore alternative paths to achieve their mission.

In the meantime, José Mujica's government is coming to an end and the 'Unofficial Mission' becomes a central piece to consolidate his legacy. As a desperate measure, Mujica himself travels to United States to discuss several issues with Barack Obama, distracting the whole world in order to nail down his mission with Alfredo.

Unofficial Mission is a humorous film without precedents. The idea of the film arose in a context where reality was stranger than fiction. A small country attained world notoriety for being the first country to fully legalize marijuana, but there was no marijuana to supply the country. Reality itself was funny, but what if we intervened it somehow to make it funnier? We created a fictional character, set him out into the real world and brought him to life. With him we embarked on a journey full of improvisation, where he interacted both with important figures from the United States as well as the Uruguayan President.
