    • Synopsis
    • April 2012 commemorates the 100th anniversary of one of the most dramatic and horrifying events of the 20th century – the sinking of the Titanic. The passenger liner, whose name is known throughout the world, sank on her maiden voyage in the Atlantic Ocean.

“God Himself could not sink this ship!” boasted the head of White Star Line, the shipping company that built the Titanic, and yet on 14 April 1912, the liner sank only two hours and forty minutes after hitting an iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean. The tragedy resulted in the loss of over 1,500 people, making it one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history.

To this day, the Titanic, without doubt one of the greatest triumphs of engineering, technology and human ingenuity of its time, is now a tragic reminder of vulnerability against the forces of nature. With 2,200 people on board - and only one chance of rescue for each person - the event has become a catalogue of tragic coincidences, bizarre omens and human culpability. But now, with detailed accounts of experiences taken from many of the survivors, the story celebrates the people, who in the face of adversity, demonstrated the finest human qualities – courage and self-sacrifice in the line of duty…
