    • Synopsis
    • This Shining City takes a sober gritty look into the identity of America. It seeks to understand how we develop our belief systems, our prejudices, and our ideologies, and when we are willing to exploit them. It pits politicians against the people, Whites against Hispanics, and love and integrity against opportunity.
The film centers around an idealistic candidate who must decide whether or not to exploit a racially charged crime that will likely galvanize his bordertown community.
This storyline is integrated with three others: A disenfranchised older businesswoman who ends up rising to power in the community as a Sarah Palinesque figure; a dogmatic Hispanic activist; and a young apolitical gardener who attempts to steer clear of his criminal past. Their stories begin separately, but after the alleged rape of a white girl by an Hispanic man, we watch how each character co-opts the incident to their own advantage—and they merge into each other with ultimately tragic consequences.
