    • Synopsis
    • The twins EYDÍS and KÁRI are only six years old when their parents’ marriage breaks up. As their newly single mother struggles to find her feet following the separation, the twins are sent for a temporary stay at a children’s home in the countryside.Kári, the smaller of the two, feels certain that he’ll never make it back home, but Eydís is convinced that their stay will be short and does her best to comfort Kári as they try to adjust to life at the home. Eydís is adamant that if they just obey the rules, of which there are plenty, their mother will come to fetch them.
But time passes, the days go by and the children are disappointed time and time again. The children’s emotional needs are completely ignored by staff at the home. The HEAD NANNY can’t stand Eydís’s optimism and joie de vivre, which don’t take a hit no matter how mean the staff is to her. One fall day, as Eydís and Kári watch the summer children return to their homes, hope seems lost. Even Eydís’s optimistic spirit seems to have been broken. But Eydís doesn’t give up and eventually finds a way out. Through her cleverness, drive and concern for her brother she plans their escape. Kári has a hard time not giving their secret away in his excitement, and often comes close to revealing it.
In the end, the children manage to escape at night, with the assistance of GUNNAR, an older boy from the vicinity, and his horse. However, the twins have a long way to go and the harsh landscape and cold weather to conquer. The journey through lava and sand fields is both difficult and dangerous. When they finally reach their old home it’s the middle of the night and the twins are shaking from exhaustion and cold. They find their home abandoned. Their upstairs neighbour finds them lying on the floor in the cold apartment and offers them food and warm clothes. When the neighbour, BETTÝ, picks up the telephone Eydís panics; she’s sure she will be sent back to Silungapollur and locks herself in the bathroom, sick with fear. Her mother arrives soon afterwards and promises that they will never have to go back as she now has a place to stay and a job to support them. All ends well.
