In Hindi, the word "Badli" is used colloquially for someone who's filling in for another person. A substitute, a temp.
It also suggests another Hindi word. "Badla", revenge.
This is the story of a "badli" driver who takes up work in the household of a nouveau riche businessman, Jagat Sodhani.
As he ferries the Sodhanis to office meetings and rendezvous at beauty parlors and highways resorts, the driver becomes privy to their secret desires. He learns that they are all desperately in need of money for their plans, angling for a share of the family fortunes.
There are cracks in the portrait of the great Hindu Undivided Family: here, in small-town India, each person is trapped in some way, looking for a release from their stifling realities.
The driver is drawn to one of them in particular: the daughter-in-law, who like him is an outsider in this house. When she appears to him as a battered victim, he is impelled to help and protect her, not realizing that he is being manipulated in a game of seduction and deceit.
But as the story unravels and tumbles into blackmail and murder, we begin to realize that appearances can be deceptive. Far from being a patsy or stooge, the driver may have infiltrated the house for his own sinister purpose. There are no victims, and no one is wholly innocent in this Noir look at the greed and corruption of small-town India.
