    • Synopsis
    • Catherine, 45, is a pension adviser whose life is organised around work and the practicalities of a handicapped farther. A burn-out propels her to break a rigorous routine and visit an old friend in Brasil.

At arrival she’s surprised by the imminent separation of her hosts. As she tries to negotiate beach-life, an encounter with Gil, a young opportunist, challenges her to rediscover her own senses. By day he mingles with tourists in the sand, at night executes obscure transactions with his life long boss, Pacha, owner of the nightclub, Barroco.

Caught on a wave of impulse, Catherine abandons the past and bets everything on her present pleasures. She embarks on a sensorial journey that could change radically his precarious condition. As Carnival explodes, their relationship collapses. Catherine’s spiralling obsession pushes Gil over the edge, in a last violent encounter which leaves her badly burned.

As Catherine recovers and gradually accepts the scars of her desire she finally finds strange comfort in the fact that there is no going back. La Salamandre is a portrait of a woman who loses and finds, an irreversible journey through a word of conflict, both wealth and violence, repulsion and attraction.
