    • Synopsis
    • Late 19th century, an enciclic by Pope Pius IX names Brazil as the land of miserable men, engulfed in darkness. There’s a dispute over the practice of catholic rites and the respect of celibacy, as part of the brazilian clergy does not accept the rule. Ambrosio de Lucca comes to Bahia, and wanting to see the real Brazil, goes straight to the backlands of the country. After an accident he saved by a hired killer named Joe of the dead, coming back from a service for Colonel Bento. Joe, is in his heart a fervorous catholic, and sees the Pope’s man as a way to salvation for his soul. The two reach the town of Massapé, where Ambrosio confirms his greatest fears, and in implementing his plan to rid this land of sin, interferes with the local economy, which relies on a yearly procession attended by a great mass of worshipers.
