    • Synopsis
    • STEVEN, a frustrated New York artist, flirts with two women at the party of literary legend PAULA GOODMAN. He gets nowhere with ALICE, but is finally able to get DANA (Taylor Schilling) to return to his loft see his artwork and gets her into bed. From that night, the course of their lives for the next sixteen years is set. We jump forward through ups and downs of parenthood, career, marriage, and friendship as the power dynamics shift. Approaching the present, Paula is in decline, Alice re-invents herself and is now with Steven, and Dana starts a new life with a new husband and child in Chicago. Intercut throughout we see Steven and Dana’s son CHARLEY, now a troubled teenager, who skips school and has a sexual and emotional encounter with JOY, a beautiful young Caribbean woman, after he arbitrarily hurls a rock toward an elementary school playground with potentially terrible consequences. It is these twists of fate, and the consequences of seemingly small decisions, that ultimately bind these individuals together as a family.
