    • Synopsis
    • In the mid-1800s, tubercular Lady Lucy Duff Gordon travels to Egypt for her health, bringing her lady’s maid, Sally Naldrett, with her.

In the strange town of Luxor, strict class structures dissolve and Lady Duff Gordon begins to treat Sally as a friend.

Sally herself soon begins a secret affair with their dragoman Omar. Before long Sally is pregnant but they both believe that the Lady will be happy for them.

Then Lord Duff Gordon arrives. He hates Luxor and cuts his visit short, devastating the Lady. On the return trip from Cairo, Sally goes into labour. Confounded, Lady Duff Gordon assists, but then disowns Sally, banishing her until the child is healthy enough to be sent to Omar’s family in Cairo.

But when the time comes, Sally jumps ship in Cairo, taking her son, determined to make a new life for them both.
