    • THE MAN WHO TALKED TO BUTTERFLIES is a feature film that tells the story of Manuela (Leandra Leal) and her search for Patrick, her husband that mysteriously disappears in the Amazon.
Patrick is a French Engineer that has been working in the construction of hydroelectric plants on the North of Brazil for the past years. Patrick has been travelling a lot, spending months away from their house in Rio de Janeiro, but this time the lack of notices worries Manuela.
One day, Manuela receives a call from an indigenous man. He says Patrick disappeared in the jungle and the indigenous people want her to help them to find him. Manuela barely understands what the man says and urgently calls the company that Patrick works for. She quickly finds out, though, that Patrick quit his job a few months ago.
In the verge of despair, Manuela decides to travel to the Amazon to search for Patrick. In her journey to the tribes, while she discovers aspects of Patrick’s life completely unknown to her, Manuela will have to face the violence that ravages the indigenous reservation. Diving dive into a wilderness she doesn’t understand, Manuela will be forced to confront her own demons.

THE MAN WHO TALKED TO BUTTERFLIES it’s a film about a clash of perspectives and the need to create connections beyond the differences that set us apart. It’s a film about boundaries between peoples and cultures, but also the boundaries we have within ourselves and we have to cross to become who we are.
Written and directed by Rita Toledo, the film stars renowned Brazilian actress Leandra Leal and is produced by Carol Benjamin. Rita, Leandra and Carol are partners in Daza Filmes, a production company based in Rio de Janeiro. The project was awarded financial support for the script development by Brazilian Audiovisual Fund (FSA / Ancine) and was selected by Marché du Film for Films from Rio, a program focused on the qualification of Brazilian filmmakers to the internalization of their projects. Films From Rio Program takes the producer to industry markets worldwide, such as Rio Market, Ventana Sur and Marché du Film in Cannes; and also provides one year of consultancy with Marché du Film’s advisors: Julie Bergeron, Marie-Pierre Macia, Licia Eminenti, David Grumbach and Laurent Danielou.
The project is in Development Stage. The screenplay is currently being written and the story is going to be told in a four-part structure, which works as a kaleidoscope – each “chapter” brings new elements that reveal the connections between the characters and how their relationships mirror each other. A research trip do Amazon is also going to happen by the end of 2017 in order to enrich the script and provide more information for the production.
