    • The love story of marriage between an earthly mortal young prince from Erl and a princess from another realm, the alternate universe of Elfland ruled by a King who will do everything in his power to secure the return of his daughter. Trolls and witches inhabit both worlds which lay in service to the King of Elfland who seeks to destroy the marriage. The elf princess returns to Elfland pursued by the now desperate Prince who has fallen into a place of great darkness. The earthly realm of Erl is eventually transformed and taken as a new part of Elfland by the King using the most powerful three magic spells and the princess is reunited with her people.

Although the novel new longevity and wider critical acclaim when a paperback edition was released in 1969 as the second volume of the Ballantine series. While seen as highly influential upon the genre as a whole, the novel was particularly formative in the subgenres of fairy tale fantasy and high fantasy.
